#6. Post Modern

Rx Art works by Jeff Koons at Advocate Hope children’s Hospital 2010.

Jeff Koons is an American artist known for his reproductions of banal objects such as Balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror finish surfaces [1].  Jeff Koons worked on ambitious projects at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois [2].  To create the installation, the Philips CT Scanner was painted, and decals featuring Koons’ Monkeys were applied to the machine.  His iconic Balloon Dog, Hanging Heart, and Donkey imagery were also installed to brighten the room as wallscapes [3].  This project was made possible through the generosity of Kiehl’s since 1851 and Jeff Koons, who generously took no artist fee for his participation in this project. I think Jeff koons did a great work on this CT Scanner project at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital.  This room is filled with bright colors, monkey heads, and a huge dog balloon.  I think anything that could make a child, and their worried parents, feel less scared in a situation like this absolutely inspirational.

A Closer Winter Tunnel, 2006 by David Hockney

Interior with Lamp, 2003 by David Hockney

Saturday Rain I, 2003 by David Hockney

David Hockney is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer.  An important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century [4].  A closer winter tunnel, February-March 2006 was the first of his multiple canvas paintings.  This 6 part painting was painted not in the studio but entirely on the spot with Hockney moving from one canvas to another, assembling the units together to see the overall effect as a very large picture [5].  Interior With Lamp is watercolor on paper on 6 sheets, and Saturday Rain I was painted in two panel with watercolor.  I like his contemporary art because his delicate painting showing a mastery of both detail and perspective.  I also like the technique that he uses different sheets of papers put together to make paintings instead of one big paper.

  1. I think Jeff Koon’s did a great job on creating a fun environment for children at the children’s hospital. Hospitals can definitely be a scary place for children and I’m sure his artwork makes them feel more at ease. I think you gave a well written bio’s for both artists. However, it wasn’t too clear on what your theme was. Nice job!

  2. I also do not find a clear, concise theme. Unfortunately, since there is no theme we cannot discern if you effectively connected your selections to the theme. When you use information from different sources be sure that everything makes sense in it’s new context. “Kiehl’s since 1851” makes little sense in the sentence about Jeff Koons generosity. Who or what is Kiehl’s? CT scanners were not around in 1851 – or even 1951 for that matter. Also, the phrase “on the spot” made sense when it was in the original source, but lost meaning when you didn’t put in the fact that the spot was in the Yorkshire (England) countryside. David Hockney was right there, standing in the middle of that dirt road, doing his six panels. He was known for meandering about the countryside with his pram (large English style baby carriage). What a character! I really like his Saturday Rain 1. I REALLY like your choices – I learned about two more artists that I had never heard of – although I recognized the monkeys immediately. Thanks for your blog.

  3. I absolutely love Jeff Koons work! It is so creative and interesting to look at. He definitely did a great job decorating children’s hospitals. I enjoyed the biographies and your reaction to each work. You also cited your sources well, however I am not sure what your theme is. Other than that, great work!

  4. Agreeing with the ladies above, great works chosen, but I have no idea what the theme was! Where is the hospital located that holds Koons’ work? I had never heard of either of these artists before so a little more background info would have been lovely. The “Saturday Rain” painting looked exactly how a porch would look if you were looking through rain streaming down the windows- the panels of the railing were painted a bit wavy and I thought it was the perfect touch.
